ForumCategory: QuestionsRotten Egg Smell in Hot Water
Paul B asked 1 year ago

We purchased a used 2015 Flagstaff 21DK. It has a Suburban hot water heater. The hot water has a sulfur smell. How do I get rid of the smell?
Also, under normal conditions does the hot water heater only need to be drained when I winterize, or should it be drained more frequently?

Do not use anything with aluminum base
Vinegar is best option but chances are if you change the Anarod it will help you may at one time had well water thru the system

Yes you have to drain your hot water once a year.    Check your anode Rod in the hot water heater it is probably  corroded and needs to be changed that is causing the bad egg smell.  If your using well water it will smell bad.

Thank you for your response.
I drained the hot water heater. Once I get the RV out of our storage spot I’ll add fresh water and see if it’s better. The anode rod does not appear to be corroded.
I found this article online talking about how to get rid of the rotten egg smell, is this overkill?
