Move Over Summer, Winter may be the Best Time to go on that RV Adventure

Move over Summer, Winter may be the best time to go on that RV Adventure

Ever wonder why everyone considers summer as the season of the RV. It seems that winter only exists to provide us time to plan that stupendous summertime RV vacation. However, the holiday season can be a wonderful time to go RVing.

For starters, everyone is flying somewhere during the holiday season. What better time to use the RV, than when the airports are teeming with passengers? Wherever you are going, I guarantee the trip will be more enjoyable in your family-cuddle-room-on-wheels as opposed to waiting on those massive lines at the airport.

Another reason that, in my opinion, winter hosts far better RV excursions than in the summer, is the fact that your body needs a vacation more at that time. A trip in December is always more appreciated than one in June. Winter recess is a break from that hectic life. Whether you are taking a break between chaotic senior year semesters, or you momentarily escaped from some massive projects at work, the winter is a great time for a vacation.

Lastly, the weather is nice. Unless you are RVing through sub-zero Siberia, winter and fall bring cool days and chilly evenings. A walk through a beautiful park could be deadly if done in the middle of summer. Not to mention the amount of sweat, the entire family would be drained in seconds walking through a scorching summer day. A cool winter day however, beckons the family outside to ski, skate across the lake, toss snowballs and build snowmen.

Ideas for where to RV during the next holiday season

Hopefully by now, this far into the article, you are intrigued by the thought of an RV adventure in the heart of winter. Next, we need to figure out where to go in our RV during winter.

TripSavvy lists the six best destinations to visit for Christmas as New York City, Chicago, Colorado, Florida, Puerto Rico and Alaska. Ironically, New York, Chicago and Florida are the most common vacation spots in the country. Navigating your RV through the narrow streets of a big city can be very challenging. In some of the cities like New York and Chicago, you wouldn’t find parking. New York City has two campgrounds outside the city, Liberty Harbour RV Park and Cheesequake State Park. Both parks have shuttle services to and from New York City. Of course, these destinations would also be popular during winter.

Here are some other destinations that are more tailored to RV adventurers

Another article on TripSavvy lists RV destinations perfect for celebrating Christmas. Yosemite National Park; Estes Park, Colorado; Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona; Stone Mountain, Georgia; Christmas, Florida; Santa Clause, Indiana; Corpus Christi, Texas.

Lots of the these destinations have nice weather, an important factor in deciding winter destinations. If I’ve been shoveling my driveway for the past two months, I would like my destination to be warm. Like a pot at the end of the rainbow, the thought that I am heading towards hot tropical weather is like a reward. It is comforting to look out the window and admire the mountains of snow that the RV is driving through while dreaming about sipping mai-tais beneath the long arms of a palm tree located at the destination you are headed.

Some people love winter. Instead of long walks on a hot beach, an RV trip destination is a lot frostier. Most of these campgrounds are gorgeous in every season, but during winter they are each exquisite. Hocking Hills State Park Campground in Ohio, Zion River Resort in Utah, Dakota Ridge RV Park in Colorado and the Crooked River State Park in Georgia are all great RV parks to check out during winter. These winter wonderlands will add the frosting to any RV adventure.

Winter is a beautiful time of year. Some people spend it in hibernation, hiding beneath a mountain of blankets. While other, more daring people, see winter as a season of adventure. Take advantage of the season and go do something your kids will brag about when they get back to school like ice climbing, snowshoeing or skijoring. To them, winter means smaller crowds and out of season prices. December is considered the middle of the year for most people, making it a perfect time for a vacation.
