RV Destinations: Top Places to Visit in Michigan

Welcome to Michigan

Don’t wonder where you’ll go when you visit Michigan in your RV. Plan for all these great places, and you won’t be disappointed. We’ll guide you to fairy doors that connect you to another world, to an aquarium of antiquity, and to all the interesting places in between. There’s a lot to see and do, so let’s get started on the adventure, shall we?

Portals to other worlds

While we can’t verify that you really will be transported to another world when you visit Ann Arbor, you will certainly find doorways that some people claim can take you there.

All around the city, scattered in different locations, miniature doors are secreted away. Many people claim these six-inch doors are used by fairies to cross from their world into ours. While the largest concentration of doorways seems to be located in a private residence, they’re not restricted to the home. These are more than just doorways; some open into private rooms for fairies, equipped with windows and working lights. There’s even a miniature movie theater so fairies have a place to go when they want to see the newest blockbuster!

Picture-perfect lakeshore

If you want a day to explore miles of beaches, discover a multitude of hiking trails, have your senses dazzled by a carpet of wildflowers, and commune with nature, then you won’t want to miss Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Situated on the beautiful Lake Superior, this is a vacation for the body, mind, and soul. The water is so blue and pristine you’ll wonder whether any other human has ever laid foot there. But there are more colors to take in than blue. Pictured Rocks is a feast for the eyes, with nature’s paintbrush working overtime to captivate you.

A booklover’s paradise

Do you love used and rare books? How about more than a million of them? That’s what you’ll get when you visit John K. King Used & Rare Books. This massive bookstore is four stories of a booklover’s paradise. While the current bookstore was opened in the ’80s, the owner started selling used books when he was in high school. It’s been a lifelong passion of his, and he carries it through to this day, amassing more and more used books. We wonder how long it will be before he outgrows this location. Maybe you can stop by and take some books off his hands when you’re in Detroit.

An artistic aquarium

When you visit the Belle Isle Aquarium, the first thing you’ll notice is the beautiful architecture of the building. It was built by famous Michigan native Albert Kahn, and it houses all kinds of freshwater and saltwater attractions. The aquarium first opened its doors in 1904, and it has remained there ever since. Not only is it the oldest aquarium in the U.S., but it also transports saltwater from the ocean to fill its tanks and houses some of the most extensive species of fish you’ll find in one location. After you’ve pried yourself away from the bookstore, the aquarium is a must-see!

A trip through time and space

Hundreds of millions of years ago, Michigan was underwater, and it was tropical. Petoskey State Park still holds onto its ancient past, and visitors to the shore can marvel at what once was. Don’t spend your time looking for ancient fossils because they’re all around you. The small gray stones with white spots are really the fossilized remains of the coral that used to live there. Make sure there’s room in your luggage so you can take a couple with you, polish them down, and see what’s inside! You won’t be disappointed.

What a wild ride. We hope we didn’t lose you through the fairy doors, but if we did, we hope you enjoy your adventure.
