The Smoothest Ride With Closed Drawers In Your RV

If you’re new to owning an RV, you might not have everything inside it organized just yet. There’s nothing more distracting than drawers and cabinets flying open as you’re driving. Not only is this problem distracting, but it can also be highly dangerous, as there is always the possibility of heavy objects injuring passengers or causing damage to your RV.

You’re probably itching to get out there in your new motorhome. However, before taking your new addition on a road trip or setting off anywhere, you are going to want to take proper precautions by securing your cupboard drawers for you and your passenger’s safety.

In this article, we discuss the best methods to safely secure the interior of your RV, so that your journey is the smoothest ride with closed drawers in your RV!

Before we get started, it is worth mentioning that many RV manufacturers sometimes have strict warranty restrictions around RV modifications. As a result, drilling holes anywhere in your RV is often prohibited to ensure that you’re still covered by the warranty.

The methods detailed below have been written with this in mind, so you don’t have to void your warranty in the process of seeking safe travel. However, to be on the safe side, always make sure that you check with the manufacturer before making any modifications to your RV.

Magnetic latches

This is probably the most universal solution to your RV’s drawers and cabinets flying open as you’re driving. Magnetic latches use electromagnetic force to stop doors from opening, so they are ideal for securing RV drawers.

The magnets hold firmly when you are driving around and can withstand between 15-20 pounds of force depending on the magnet, so you don’t have to worry about your possessions flying about the place and hurting a passenger!

Child safety locks

Another method to secure the drawers inside your RV is to use child safety locks. If you’ve got children, then you know these locks are built to keep children safe and to make sure their hands are out of cupboards they shouldn’t be in!

This type of lock works well for RV cabinets and drawers because they are meant to withstand a large amount of pulling force to keep your tot from getting into drawers!

These types of safety locks utilize a combination of magnetic locks and extremely strong adhesive tape. They are also extremely convenient to install, so you don’t have to waste hours on this solution!

Bungee cord

This method uses something you’re highly likely to have around the house already: a bungee cord! However, this method isn’t universal as every RV has a different interior and you might struggle depending on the handles of your drawers and cupboards. As a result, then, it will only work on certain types of RV drawers and cabinets.

To use this method, grab a bungee cord and wrap it tightly around the cabinet handles. You can also run the rope through a set of drawers in order to prevent them from sliding out, too.

Velcro strips

Velcro strips with adhesive can work effectively for securing light drawers and cabinets in your RV.

However, user discretion is advised. Generally speaking, velcro strips cannot withstand a large amount of force and should only be used when the items within the drawers and cabinets are not very heavy. If you are worried about securing heavier items, make sure that you choose a stronger alternative, such as the magnets we suggested above.

Storage containers

Using storage containers is another idea that might help you with this issue. This is by no means a permanent solution for preventing your RV drawers from flying open, however, it will help keep your possessions from moving around as much and can help prevent the items from pushing the drawers and cabinets open.

For instance, you can get your hands on pan holders that will help keep them in place while driving.

Storage containers can also help you organize the contents of your drawers on a long-term basis, and will work excellently in combination with one of the other methods above if you want to get really organized whilst traveling.

In summary

There are many ways to secure your RV so that you’re safe and ready for your next adventure! Road safety is not something that should be taken lightly, especially when it comes to traveling with your family.

Hopefully, this article has given you some ideas on how to make sure that you secure your RV drawers before heading anywhere for the smoothest ride!
